It has recently come to my attention that I am apparently giving free photography lessons or at least that’s the only way the following could possibly have happened.  Supposedly now at least two individuals who have never worked with me or taken one of my classes have told people they have learned their photography skills from me.  The entire reason for this blog entry is to assure anyone out there who may have hired someone claiming to have ‘learned from’ or ‘worked’ with me that they are more than welcome to contact me directly to confirm such statements.  I can easily answer the question here in stating that the only person outside of my family who has had any experience in working directly with me is Ashley Latimer.  I did have one other young lady who assisted me in my studio for a grand total of about two photo sessions and during those sessions I gave her practically no photographic instruction.

May I suggest that when hiring a photographer that you never take such statements such as ‘I have worked with ___’ or I have taken classes here or there with a grain of salt…  Ask to see lots of examples of their work and ask questions about their technical skills and what kind of PROFESSIONAL equipment they are using!  Ask them what their preferred LIGHTING RATIO is and why?  Ask them how they color balance for different lighting scenarios and what they do when they are shooting under florescent lighting.  YES, even digital cameras have issues with florescent lighting!  Find out if they even know the difference between an incident light reading and a reflected reading.  Ask them what an exposure factor is and if they don’t know fire them before you hire them!

By the way, if you have taken a photography course and you still don’t know how to use a camera, then perhaps you really haven’t had a photography course.  Learning how to process images in a darkroom and learning how to use and camera and manipulate light are very different things.
